Application to this scholarship is not restricted to college bound students. Any graduate interested in pursuing further art related education, through workshop classes, college courses, apprenticeships and such may apply. Selection is based on the applicant’s GPA (a minimum of 2.5), an essay outlining the role art will play in their future educational plans, a portfolio of work, letters of recommendation and an interview. Application deadline is April 16, 2011.

2010 High School Graduate Scholarship Winner Amanda Bentley

AMANDA BENTLEY RECIEVES PAA ART SCHOLARSHIP

Ocean Park, Washington, June 3, 2010 - An interest in fashion illustration, two illustrated children’s books, preliminary sketches and published poster design for a PAPA play production and several filled sketchbooks gave Ocean Park’s Amanda Bentley the win in Peninsula Arts Association’s High School Graduate Scholarship competition.

Five very talented applicants met the criteria to proceed to the interview process. A panel of six PAA members considered grade point, essays, letters of recommendation, art portfolios and interview results to make the choice. The annual scholarship is awarded to an art directed senior from the Ocean Beach or Naselle-Grays River Valley school districts.

"Amanda presented a finished poster, fashion design sketchbooks, very well rendered fabric pattern designs and two handmade, ink and watercolor illustrated children’s books," said Scholarship Chair Elizabeth Bonn-Zimmerman. "She has excellent graphic and color sense and is very well spoken. Her drawings of people were very good and comments in the margins original and kindly humorous."

Having been enrolled in the Running Start Program at Clatsop Community College for the last two years, Bentley will receive her Associates of Arts Degree on June 18. Her plans are to move on to Portland State University, majoring in Fashion Journalism and Illustration with a minor in French, then on to Los Angeles or New York and hopefully France, to work in the fashion industry.
