PENINSULA ARTS ASSOCIATION - CALL FOR NON-ARTISTS

Ocean Park, Washington, March 11, 2010 – Contrary to the usual Call For Art broadcast issued by organizations in the process of producing an art show, Peninsula Arts Association is also putting out a call to non-artists with an interest in supporting the arts.

“The art world is exciting, creative and imaginative,” said PAA President Bonnie Cozby.  “But there is also a world behind the art that offers many of the same challenges and requires much of the same effort that our artists experience and put into their work.”

Although PAA is comprised almost entirely of active artists, there is a small core of hard working members that are either taking a break from creating art or have joined the group solely for the purpose of taking on a support role.  Every event, project, marketing strategy, community participation program, as well as the general administrative tasks needed to effectively run an organization of over 100 members, requires a crew of dedicated and creative people to see that it is done well with a consistent level of expertise.

“We were very fortunate to retain our entire 2009 Board for this year,” said Vice President Myrna Kay Thompson.  “Working with the same group for two, or in some cases, many more years has allowed us to focus on the best ways to get the work done.  Our artists give very generously of their time in order to keep things going smoothly, but there is always a need for more to help…PAA is growing and delving into new projects every year.”

For someone not well versed in all things arty, a support role in PAA offers the opportunity to learn not only what it takes to put on a successful show, but what the world of art and community artists is really about.  Meeting creative people who work in the countless media of art, going into school classrooms as a team with materials and art projects in hand or achieving satisfaction from a job well done are only a few of the benefits available as a support member.  Finding your own creative spark is another.

“We are moving into a much larger role of community involvement,” said Cozby.  “Our first priority will always be our member artists, followed by our High School Graduate Scholarship and Art Enrichment programs.  Add to that the hope of a future community art center and you can see the need for more support volunteers, but of course, we don’t expect everyone to work on everything.  I should say though, it can be slightly addicting.”

Peninsula Arts Association is celebrating their 40th year of continued art presence on the Long Beach Peninsula.  Along with spring and fall art shows, a summer art festival, a fall studio tour, summer’s Starving Artist sale, ongoing Art Around Town shows in the Ocean Beach Hospital and the new Pacific County building, ongoing school classroom art projects, annual scholarship award, monthly meetings with demonstrations, participation in the Garlic Festival and 4th of July Parade and monthly newsletter, they have added a Patron of the Arts Program, a 40th Anniversary Champagne Brunch, a 40th Anniversary Eric Wiegardt Original Watercolor Raffle (generously donated by Eric Wiegardt) and a Marcia Rockwell Memorial Art Auction to the schedule.  To learn more about the activities and opportunities PAA offers, or to become a member or Patron Of the Arts, visit: www.beachartist.org or call Bonnie Cozby at 360-665-6041.  Peninsula Arts Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
